Deep regret for the death of the former president of the PR Bar Association, Edgardo M. Román Espada

Message from the President of the Puerto Rico Bar Association (CAAPR) upon the death of former president Edgardo Román Espada.

It is with great regret that we announce the sudden death of Edgardo Manuel Román Espada, former president of the Puerto Rico Bar Association, 2018-2020.

There are not enough words to express what our dear Edgardo was for his family, his friends, colleagues and the CAAPR. An example of equanimity, he was always characterized by his enthusiasm and energy, enjoying everything he did, and never refusing a responsibility or a request. A generous man in his expression towards others with a sense of social responsibility that led him to get involved in dozens of causes and be the social conscience for many people. Champion of human rights and defender of civil liberties.

Beyond being a tireless collaborator, Edgardo was ready to give useful advice, to be a mentor, the calm voice of reason in stormy times, to give a genuine smile and share his experiences to teach us with his words and his actions the right course to follow. Edgardo was the engine that started many projects until they flew.

Husband, father and grandfather, son and brother, proud of his family, but also the pride of his family; his face illuminated everytime he spoke of them.

Our country has lost a great citizen, a leader that promoted the best human values, a defender of the most oppressed classes. The CAAPR has lost a bright star that led us along the path of service, solidarity and empathy towards the people.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends. May God give us the strength to accept the painful journey in Edgardo’s physical absence, in the certainty that his memory will endure eternally in us and in the journals of the Puerto Rico Bar Association.

The Acts of Remembrance will be held next Friday, October 21, 2022, starting at 9:00 in the morning, in our facilities in Miramar.

Manuel Quilichini
