Organizations Launch 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence

More than a dozen organizations, headed by the Puerto Rico Association of Social Work Professionals (CPTSPR), presented the International Campaign of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence that aims to make visible the unstoppable violence experienced by women in Puerto Rico. This campaign is promoted by the Center for Global Leadership of Women, where hundreds of organizations participate worldwide, among them the collectives of Puerto Rico gathered here today.

"Today, faced with the sad figure of more than 60 femicides, a state of emergency due to gender violence, an Office of Women’s Affairs without a official appointed at the moment, and an educational curriculum without adopting the gender perspective proposed by government advisers, we have to raise our voices united in the aspiration to build a culture of equity. A culture that brings peace and security for all of us who insist on defending a better country, worthy of all. Therefore, we invite you to join and participate in the prevention efforts in these 16 days, together with your families, communities, churches, organizations, groups, couples and all people in their individual capacity, so that we can affirm 'not one more, not one less', as every year", said Mabel T. López-Ortiz, former CPTSPR president and campaign spokesperson.

Starting on November 25th, the The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, 16 Days of Activism begin, culminating on 0 December 10th with the celebration of International Human Rights Day. The CPTSPR, through the work of the Standing Commission for the Human Rights Defense, coordinates the campaign, which consists of a 16-day calendar of activities for people of all ages. The activities are created by the organizations united in these efforts of prevention and action. Some of these are: Taller Salud, Observatorio de Equidad de Género, Aborto Libre, Matria, Amnesty International (Puerto Rico chapter), Siempre Vivas, Centro de la Mujer Dominicana, Coordinadora Paz para la Mujer, Revista Étnica, universities such as the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus, Ana G Méndez University and Sacred Heart University.

As of November 25, people can access the 2022 Activity Calendar on the CPTSPR website, www.cptspr.org. You will also find the Socio-educational Guide to the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence to create your own activities. The organizations are inviting all public to the closing of the campaign on December 10 with the 6th Human Rights Festival, which will be held at the "Casa Ruth" located in Rio Piedras Square from 9:00 in the morning. This celebration will offer information on human rights, legal services to defend them and other cultural and artistic activities aimed at children and adults.
